This is a great series of photos that illustrate very well the fact that Mardi Gras is something locals load up the car with family and friends to attend. I made a point to snap several shots of families enjoying the setup and eventually the procession of Super Krewe Endymion. A much different scene is being played out down in the French Quarter and especially on Bourbon Street.

My main goal for this site is to educate visitors and media folks about what Mardi Gras means to local New Orleaneans. Nothing wrong with partying in the French Quarter. We do that too, especially when the Saints win. But thinking you have experienced New Orleans by hanging out on Bourbon Street is like going to Disneyworld in Orlando, staying in the Disney compound, and thinking you know Florida.

Bourbon Street is just there to take your money. Either spending it on overpriced alcohol, or getting pick-pocketed and panhandled. Get out of there ASAP.
