Capturing the Mardi Gras spirit in photos seemed like a huge task at first but turned out to be just a matter of keeping my eyes open while enjoying the most photogenic party on earth. It is my hope that you leave this site with a better understanding of the Mardi Gras experience. This event gets a lot of national press for the wrong reasons.
To New Orleanians Mardi Gras means Parades, Kids, Family, King Cake, Music, and good clean fun. The national press loves to focus on those Bourbon Street flashers, most of whom come from out of town and occupy a very tiny corner of our city. Rarely does anyone mention the brand of freedom that New Orleanians enjoy. We have the freedom here to be anything or anyone that we want to be. We can be as gay or as straight as we like. We can be any race or religion. We can be drunk or sober 24-7 in the open. And because of that freedom New Orleans is home to every type of person imaginable. A true paradise for a people watcher like myself and an example to the world that every kind of person can live together in harmony not borne by tolerance but by genuine appreciation for every unique quality.
